How to check which bulb your car takes
The Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen was built from 2012–2015. If your car is from those years, the bulbs in the chart are for US-market versions with halogen headlights. Before you buy, double-check one of these three ways:
- Owner’s manual: the maintenance or “bulb replacement” section has the official chart with every bulb.
- The old bulb: the size (9005, H11, 194…) is stamped on the metal base or the plastic housing.
- The headlight: many headlight assemblies have a label on the back listing the bulb for each light.
Watch out for refreshes: some models change headlights mid-generation. If your car is from a changeover year, check the old bulb.
Still not sure? Our guide on how to find out which bulb your car takes covers the other methods and the most common pitfalls, and the complete car bulb guide brings everything together.
How to replace the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen low beam bulb
- Turn the car off, remove the key and let the headlight cool for a few minutes: a halogen bulb that was just on is very hot.
- Open the hood and find the back of the headlight assembly. The low beam is usually behind a round rubber or plastic cap.
- Unplug the electrical connector by pulling on the plug (not the wires), then release the clip or twist the bulb to remove it, depending on the model.
- Install the new bulb without touching the glass with your fingers: skin oils create hot spots and shorten its life. Use gloves or a clean cloth.
- Reinstall the clip, connector and cap, and check that the light works before closing the hood.
- Always replace them in pairs: if one has burned out, the other isn’t far behind, and both will shine the same.
If it is your first time, our step-by-step low-beam replacement guide goes into more detail: the differences between bulb bases and when to let a shop handle it.
⚠️ On some cars you need to remove the battery, the washer fluid reservoir or pull back the wheel well liner to reach the headlight. If you can’t see the rear cap, check the owner’s manual.
Can you put LED bulbs in the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen?
For the low and high beams, LED retrofit bulbs installed in a headlight housing designed for halogen bulbs are not DOT / FMVSS 108 compliant for on-road use in the US, even when the packaging says “DOT approved”. A halogen reflector or projector isn’t built for an LED light source, so the beam pattern can scatter and glare oncoming drivers, and it may cause dashboard warnings or problems at a state inspection. We explain the rules in more depth in our guide on whether LED headlight bulbs are street legal.
If you want more light without the hassle, high-performance halogen bulbs (up to +100% to +200% brighter) are street legal and fit any headlight. We compare those lines, plus long-life options, in our guide to the best 9005 and H11 headlight bulbs.

Frequently asked questions
What size low beam bulb does the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen take?
The Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen (2012–2015) takes a HB4 bulb for the low beam headlights on trims with halogen headlights.
What about the high beam?
For the high beam headlights, the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen takes a HB3.
What bulb do the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen fog lights take?
The front fog lights on the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen use H11 bulbs.
Should I replace headlight bulbs in pairs?
Yes, it’s recommended. Both low beam bulbs get the same use, so if one burns out the other won’t last much longer. Replacing them together keeps one headlight from being brighter than the other and restores the original light output.
Is it legal to put LED headlight bulbs in the Honda Civic Sedan 9th gen?
Not in the headlights, if they were designed for halogen bulbs: LED retrofit bulbs in halogen housings are not DOT / FMVSS 108 compliant for on-road use. LED bulbs are common and fine for turn signals, parking, license plate and dome lights, as long as they keep the right color.
